SSH is a protocol for encrypted text transmission via the internet. It works very much like telnet, but includes encryption so that traffic cannot be read by the casual snooper. SSH is native to Unix-like operating systems and OSX, but not Windows. One popular SSH client for Windows is PuTTY [[1]].
